NONRESIDENT STUDENT ENROLLMENT:

Nonresident Student Enrollment Policy Information

The Kansas Legislature enacted an “open enrollment’ statute which included numerous provisions that were required to be adopted by school districts prior to January 1, 2024.  The open enrollment statute focused on out of district students/families having a choice on what school district to attend, based on availability of the respective school district.  Here are some key components of the adopted USD 251 BOE policy.

  • School districts must determine the number of “open seats” annually prior to May 1st.

  • “Open seats” are determined by grade level for each school building.

  • The “open seats” available are published on the school website by June 1st by building and grade.

  • Parents can apply from June 1 – June 30 for any openings listed for out-of-district students.

  • If the number of applicants is less than the number of openings, the student will be accepted.

  • If the number of applicants is more than the number of openings, the school district will conduct a lottery to determine who is accepted by July 15.

  • Priority openings are given to siblings of current students and military dependents.

  • Students of employees and homeless students are exempt from the policy.

  • Current students residing outside of USD 251 attending the school district are exempt from the application process so long as they remain in good standing.

  • Once students have been accepted and enrolled, they can continue to attend USD 251 until graduation as long as they remain in good standing.

The Nonresident Student Application, as well as the number of open seats will be published here by June 1.
