Mental Skills and Drills Workshop

On Monday, November 27, Mark Stanbrough and the Emporia State University Sports Psychology Team visited the school to present a Mental Skills and Drills Workshop. The team presented five topics for better mental performance. These topics were labeled as imagery, focus, proper arousal, goals, and self talk.

Imagery was presented with a session of visualizing your previous great moments and feeling the same feelings you had then.

Focus was demonstrated with a game in which one member of a group would toss small sticks in the air and everyone would try to catch them. Then another round is played where the goal is to only catch the red stick.

Proper arousal was portrayed with trying to maintain a proper amount of focus before an event you were taking part in. This was represented with a competition between students on who could blow the biggest bubble in their group.

Goals was shown with the game Giants, Wizards, and Elves. This game uses the same rules as Rock, Paper, Scissors. This game was used to show that you can have the goal to not lose, but sometimes it my not be in your control.

Self talk was depicted with a session in which you write down negative points and change them to positive points using five key points. These were to be present-tense, something personal, powerful, straight to the point, and positive.
