Dr. Kevin Rabas Visiting Northern Heights High School English Class

September 21, 2017

Mr. Becker's room had a special visitor as Kevin Rabas stopped by to share poetry with students. Kansas Poet Laurette, Kevin Rabas (MAS, Goddard College; PhD, KU), leads the poetry and playwriting tracks at Emporia State University. Rabas writes poetry, plays, flash fiction, and creative nonfiction. He has nine books, including Bird's HornLisa's Flying Electric PianoLate for Cymbal Line, and All That Jazz. He writes regularly for KC's Jazz Ambassador Magazine (JAM). Rabas's plays have been produced across Kansas and in San Diego. Rabas is the winner of the Langston Huges Award for Poetry, the Victor Contoski Poetry Award, the Jerome Johanning Playwriting Award, and the Salina New Voice Award. He can be contacted at krabas@emporia.edu or kevinjamesrabas.com.

Professor Rabas led the students through poetry writing exercises, listened as students shared their own work, and answered questions about a variety of subjects. As part of a visiting author series, Dr. Rabas is the first of many authors to visit Mr. Becker's class this year. Seven authors in total will stop by and share their own genres. Fiction writers, an essayist, and a journalist are on the schedule. The visiting writer's series is part of a larger English in Action project designed to bring the ELA to life for students at Northern Heights.
