Family, Career, Community Leaders of America is an organization that promotes personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. The Northern Heights Chapter has an impact upon their school and community through personal leadership projects and community service. Some projects and activities for the 2009-2010 school year are as follows:
In September we planned a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House. Having known a local couple who had used the facilities, we took on the cause by making balloon animals, selling treats, and face painting. Altogether we raised $200 for the McDonald House. The Meek family from Reading came and visited at our January meeting. They told of their wonderful experience at the house while their son, Crady, was a patient at Stormont Vail. Crady is now healthy and doing well.
In October we started a paper drive and penny drive for a local shelter. We chose SOS in Emporia as our local shelter to help. Goods and money were collected and taken to the District H Fall Leadership Academy. All members traveled to Burlington for a day of work-shops, games, and speakers. While at the leadership academy, we worked as a chapter to make tie blankets. The blankets were also given to SOS.
In December we traveled to Holiday Resort in Emporia. Members spent the morning with residents. We sang Christmas carols, delivered handmade cards and candies, and visited. We also adopted two children from the Salvation Army for Christmas.
In January, we are busy planning our Winter Ball. This year the theme is "Rock'n Roll"
