December 3, 2020

Parents and athletes,

The KSHSAA Board of Directors (BOD) met in a virtual format with all 78 members in attendance on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, to discuss several items pertaining to the winter activity season.
By KSHSAA Board of Director’s adoption, no spectators will be permitted for middle school and high school contests from December 1, 2020 through January 28th, 2021. This adoption includes spectators for basketball players, wrestlers, cheerleaders, dance team and band.
Our school district has sent KSHSAA a formal letter of appeal requesting that the decision disallowing spectators be reconsidered and revoked. All schools have until noon today to submit an appeal letter. Schools were notified yesterday that an appeal hearing before the KSHSAA Appeals Board has been scheduled for Friday at 1:00 pm. The Appeal Board will then make a recommendation to the KSHSAA Board of Directors. It is our understanding that the Board of Directors is not bound by the recommendation from the Appeals Board. As of now, a Board of Directors Special Meeting date has not been set, however, we have good reason to believe this will happen in the very near future.
The KSHSAA Board of Directors voted in favor to continue the winter activity competition through December 22, 2020, before taking a winter moratorium from practice and competition (no practice and no competition) beginning December 23, 2020 through January 3, 2021.  Practice may resume on January 4, 2021, and competition may resume on January 8, 2021.  This action was taken for middle schools and high schools.
The KSHSAA Board of Directors also took action resulting in the requirement for all participants (athletes, coaches, officials, spectators, support staff, and all others attending/participating in school activities) to wear a face-covering in the manner it is intended to be worn while at the event venue and for the duration of the event.  The only exception is provided for athletes during the time they are competing and for officials during active play.
Basketball games will continue to be played as scheduled.  Game times will be 4:30, 6:00, and 7:30 pm.  Wrestling matches will follow the Council Grove schedule. Games will be live-streamed when possible.  Please check our website facebook page for more information.
We look forward to playing our season, playing games, and keeping our students/athletes healthy and safe.  As always if you have any questions please let me know.
